GHMC. Stray dogs maul accident victim at Gandhi Hospital HYDERABAD: It was just waiting to happen. In a bone-chilling incident, an accident victim who was reportedly waiting for treatment outside the emergency ward of Gandhi Hospital on Friday morning was attacked by a pack of dogs that viciously mauled at his injured leg. Paralysed by the sight of the dogs attacking the youth, onlookers watched helplessly even as the victim was left defenceless for several minutes. By the time the dogs were chased away, the youth, Gopi, was left with a large gaping wound to his thigh. Following the commotion, two attendents finally came forward to take him inside the hospital. However, the shocked victim stayed rooted at the spot, asking for some time to recuperate from the traumatic incident. It can be recalled that TOI had recently highlighted the stray dog menace in government hospitals in the city which posed a great danger to patients and attendants. But the government remained insensitive to the issue and took no action so far. As a consequence, the worst fears seemed to have come true in Friday's ghastly incident when Gopi was attacked by three vicious stray canines right outside the emergency ward of the Gandhi Hospital. Gopi had reportedly met with an accident on Thursday and was admitted to the hospital by the Keesara police. Owing to the fact that it was a long weekend, there was a shortage of duty doctors and many patients were left unattended in front of the emergency ward. Earlier on Thursday, a five-year-old girl was attacked by a stray canine at Karmanghat. Fortunately she suffered only a minor injury and received treatment in time. After the news of Friday morning's attack spread, the GHMC finally got into action and sent its dog rescue squad to the hospital. It caught up to seven dogs on the hospital premises. "There are so many dogs around the area. Attendees of the patients are left vulnerable to attacks as they are not allowed inside the hospital," said a witness. As per the records with the GHMC, last year there were 30,124 cases of dog bites in the city. The population estimates with the civic body place the number of strays to 5 lakh. In the past four years the GHMC has managed to vaccinate only 44,000 dogs. GHMC officials said 24 teams would be set up across its limits which would also be accompanied by 102 dog catchers. "The primary focus of the GHMC would be to sterilise and also vaccinate the dogs against rabies," said a senior official from the veterinary department of the GHMC. End dog menace at OGH by April 15: SHRC HYDERABAD: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Tuesday came down heavily on Osmania General Hospital (OGH) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for failing to curb dog menace at the hospital. The commission directed both parties to put an end to the problem by April 15 and submit a report of the action taken in this regard. It was earlier written in these columns how patients are often forced to share beds with dogs at night. Also, former corporator Amjad Ullah Khan had filed a petition with the SHRC against dog menace at OGH. "The commission has asked the authorities to stop playing blame-game and put an end to the problem," Amjad said. "The SHRC said it was a shame that such a renowned hospital in the capital of two states cannot stop dogs from entering its premises," he added. Of late, OGH has become home to stray dogs causing a lot of inconvenience to patients and their relatives. However, when questioned about this, the authorities had said that the vastness of the hospital was to be blamed. "OGH is a huge place. It does not have grills or fences. Therefore, we cannot keep the animals out of the premises. It is not that we do not make efforts, but the animals keep coming back," said C G Raghuram, hospital superintendent. He also said that one of the main reasons for the dog menace was people themselves. "Most people coming in do not maintain cleanliness. They litter the entire place and throw leftover food. This is what attracts animals. Since Osmania is a huge place, it is wrong to expect us to keep all the animals out," he added. |
