Deer rescued from frigid waters in Grosse Ile The Grosse Ile Police Department said a barking dog alerted them to a deer struggling to climb out of the frigid waters in the Thorofare Canal on Wednesday. The female deer was able to get its front legs out of the water onto the ice, but it could not get enough leverage to pull itself up and out of the water, according to police. Animal control officers and fire officials first attempted to rescue the deer using ladders, but it was spooked and swam to the opposite shoreline before becoming trapped again. Police say the crews were finally able to pull the deer to safety using water rescue equipment. The deer is now being treated at the Grosse Ile Animal Shelter for shock and hypothermia.
