 Òîòòàïïàëëè ýêîëîãè êàæäûé äåíü ñîâåðøàþò îáõîä ïëÿæåé â ïîèñêàõ êëàäîê ÿèö ìîðñêèõ ÷åðåïàõ äëÿ òîãî, ÷òîáû ñïàñòè ÿéöà è ÷åðåïàõ îò óíè÷òîæåíèÿ áðîäÿ÷èìè ñîáàêàìè.
Åæåäíåâíî íà÷èíàÿ ñ 4.30 óòðà îíè ïðîõîäÿò 7 êèëîìåòðîâ ïî áåðåãó ìîðÿ â ïîèñêàõ ÷åðåïàøüèõ ÿèö, ÷òîáû ñîáðàòü èõ è ïîìåñòèòü â èíêóáàòîð.
Ìîðñêèå ÷åðåïàõè ïî íî÷àì îòêëàäûâàþò ÿéöà íà áåðåãó çàðûâàÿ èõ â ïåñîê, à ïîòîì ïîêèäàþò êëàäêó íà 45-60 äíåé.
Ïî ñëîâàì àêòèâèñòà ôîíäà ñïàñåíèÿ ìîðñêèõ æèâîòíûõ ã-íà Ñàíòîøà îíè òàêæå íàõîäÿò íåìàëî ðàíåíûõ è ðàñòåðçàííûõ ñîáàêàìè ÷åðåïàõ. Ñîáàêè ëîâÿò èõ êîãäà îíè âûõîäÿò íà áåðåã äëÿ îòêëàäûâàíèÿ ÿèö.

Environmental activists have stumbled upon a cache of eggs of marine turtles on the Thottapally coast. As many as 120 eggs found on the shore have been removed to a protected hatchery nearby to ensure the safety of the eggs.
Marine turtles reach the shore at night and lay eggs in zones free from the hustle and bustle of the coastal area, says A. Santhosh, a member of Green Roots, a nature conservation forum that focuses on protection of marine species.
“Over 100 eggs are laid by a single turtle. The turtle removes the sand for the purpose and paddles sand over the eggs before returning to the sea. The eggs hatch within 45-60 days, in the absence of the mother turtle,” he says.
The forum has been engaged in nature protection works in Purakkad and Thrikkunnappuzha grama panchayats since 2008 and the organisation was formally launched in 2013.
It is working in close association with the Social Forestry division of the Wildlife Department, which provides financial grant for the conservation efforts.
The activists walk along the coastal stretch early in the morning in search of eggs. The mission starts around 4.30 a.m. and a 7-km stretch is covered everyday.

“The turtles come ashore to lay eggs at night. They retract in the face of disturbances, mostly from stray dogs. The dogs attack the turtles and a few of them had been found injured in the attack in the past,” Mr. Santhosh says.
